Based on that diagram, the 41mm S7 display area is actually slightly larger than the S6 44mm. Recall that the original Apple Watch came in 38mm and 42mm. The small S7, being 41mm, has a display just 1mm smaller than the old big one. The small S7 has a case size 1mm smaller, the display on the s7 is much larger.

Edit: I'm a guy with 6.5 inch WRISTS. WRISTS. Based on the Apple Store app actual size I think 40mm looks way more reasonable and 44mm seems like it would be garish and huge. I want the watch more as a fashion accessory and I feel like the big one will look more like a tech gadget strapped to my arm.
